Foundation
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) applies to children of five and under. The aim of the EYFS is to lay a secure foundation for learning, recognising that children develop in different ways and at different rates. Schools aim to enhance children’s skills in and knowledge and understanding of:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication, Language and Literacy
- Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World
- Physical Development
- Creative Development
All six areas of learning are equally important and delivered through appropriate planned, purposeful play, with a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities. Above all, children should enjoy their learning.
Assessment is an important part of the learning process. In the EYFS this is mostly done through ongoing observation of children. Teachers record their observations and sum up each child’s achievement on the EYFS Profile, which is reported to parents and local authorities at the end of the foundation stage. This information is also made available to Key Stage 1 teachers when children move into Year 1 (or change schools).
Schofield & Sims’ resources are widely used and trusted by early years’ practitioners, and will help to enhance your child’s skills in and knowledge and understanding of the six areas of learning above. Our books support personalised and independent learning at home as well as in school, cater for children of differing abilities, help to boost children’s confidence by encouraging them to take pride in their work, and offer excellent value for money.
