Teaching Method
I can do maths is a structured, whole-school teaching method based on daily maths practice sessions using Schofield & Sims Mental Arithmetic books.
No two schools are the same, but the easy, cost-effective and flexible nature of I can do maths means that whatever your school's circumstances, maths success is within reach.
As testament to the flexibility of I can do maths, the 'I can do maths at ...' case studies feature a range of different types of schools, at different stages in their adoption of I can do maths. Some schools have adapted the method to suit their own needs: for example, pupils may complete the daily maths practice sessions in after-school clubs or as homework.
Whatever the individual approach, two common themes run through the case studies. The first is the significant improvement in attainment experienced by these schools as a result of continued use of Schofield & Sims Mental Arithmetic. The second is the positive impact that I can do maths has had on the maths culture in these schools.
"I can do maths homework provides individualised mathematical learning for pupils of all abilities. It enables each child to work at their own speed and targets parental support in a purposeful way."
"Since implementing I can do maths into our weekly maths routine, the mental concepts of our pupils have clearly improved, alongside their knowledge of mathematical vocabulary."
"The impact of I can do maths on standards has been impressive. Our maths results have consistently out-performed the local authority and national average since we introduced it, with 61% of pupils achieving Level 5 in 2012 (our highest ever!)."
"We have seen a real improvement in mental maths skills since starting I can do maths, with Year 6 mental maths SATs results steadily improving. We feel that the Mental Arithmetic books provide structured, purposeful and manageable homework tasks, which in turn are helping to secure and improve mental calculation skills."
"Maths is my subject specialism, so encouraging a love of maths in the pupils in my school is very important to me. We have been using the Schofield & Sims Mental Arithmetic books with I can do maths for three years and have seen our data improve year on year."
"We began to use I can do maths following an Ofsted inspection in 2008, which found that our children were not as proficient as they should have been in mental calculations. We immediately began to see the benefits and have continued with it for the last four years."
We focus our attention on the core subjects of English, Maths and Science and ensure that all our resources are written by expert teachers and support the EYFS and National Curriculum (KS1 and KS2).
