Spelling

A structured programme to help you plan, teach and assess spelling in a systematic and progressive way.

Spelling

Comprising six pupil books and two books for teachers, Spelling is suitable for all pupils who have a basic understanding of letter-sound relationships. This accessible series, ideal for whole-school use, gives pupils extensive practice in using their phonics knowledge to spell words and encourages them to become effective spellers.

The Spelling series introduces rules, guidelines and conventions and encourages pupils to develop the skills and strategies they need to become confident spellers who can monitor and correct their own spelling. The series is supported by a range of free downloadable resources available from the Schofield & Sims website.

Why choose Spelling?

Based on the popular pedagogical model 'Teach, practise, apply and assess', the series builds pupils' knowledge of spellings by providing:

  • A systematic approach – common spelling rules, patterns and word conventions are introduced gradually to build strong foundations
  • A focus on etymology and word structure – pupils explore prefixes, suffixes and shared word origins to understand and remember spellings, enabling them to spell multiple words from a single root
  • Helpful strategies for tricky words – pupils learn techniques for remembering common exception words and unfamiliar topic vocabulary that don't follow standard rules
  • Regular assessment – tailored dictation activities and varied assessment types help consolidate learning, track progress and identify areas for improvement

Spelling Pupil Books

Each Spelling Pupil Book is divided into six sections containing five main pages that introduce new spelling conventions, followed by a Tricky words or Topic words page that focuses on particular words. Books 2 to 6 also feature regular Revision sections that use crossword-style clues, cloze and proofreading activities to elicit spellings that pupils should have mastered.

The main pages in the pupil books have a simple and consistent structure comprising three parts:

  1. Remember – a description of the pattern, strategy or guideline with an example
  2. Try it – practice in spelling words using the pattern, strategy, rule or guideline
  3. Read–cover–write – practice in using the spelling focus in whole sentences.

Teaching support

An accompanying Teacher's Guide provides detailed teaching notes for every pupil book, with clear explanations of spelling concepts and practical suggestions for introducing and exploring each learning point in the pupil books. The guide helps teachers deliver confident, effective spelling instruction with minimal preparation time.

A separate Teacher's Resource Book contains a wealth of photocopiable masters to support teaching, assessment and record-keeping. Resources include additional word lists, dictation tests, progress tracking sheets and assessment materials, giving teachers everything they need to monitor pupil progress and adapt teaching to individual needs.
